For your nineteenth

Nineteen is a doorway. Behind you are all the years that made you. Ahead of you is a whole one — and it already has your name on it.

I hope it is full of new adventures: the kind you will tell badly, and often. I hope it is full of good friends — the ones who show up, who laugh at exactly the right moment, who make an ordinary Tuesday feel like something worth keeping.

And I hope you enjoy it. Not just the highlight reel; the whole slow thing. Take up space this year. Try the idea you have been circling. Say yes a little more often than feels comfortable.

Happy nineteenth, Jason.

Jason,

I wanted to give you something that was not just another message in a chat window — something with a little weight to it, that you could come back to whenever you liked.

So here it is: a small corner of the internet, made only for you.

Nineteen is a strange and bright age. You are old enough to know better and young enough to do it anyway, and honestly, that is the best combination there is. Do not rush it. The year will go quickly enough on its own.

Thank you for being the kind of person worth making things for.

Happy birthday.
